China is one of the worlds largest producers of sweeteners, dominating the global market for many high-intensity sweeteners such as saccharin, cyclamate, acesulfame-K (Ace-K), stevia, aspartame, sucralose, glycyrrhizin, alitame and neotame. Consumption is also rising rapidly in China thanks to the increasing popularity of sugar-enriched food and beverage products.
However, many sectors are mired in overcapacity, with prices dropping so low that Chinese producers are in danger of being hit by anti-dumping measures in key export markets. Meanwhile, companies are struggling to upgrade their production technology and adapt to much stricter environmental regulations.
Sweeteners China News will help you stay ahead of the game in this fast-changing market with real-time reporting on the entire sweeteners industry chain, from raw materials to end consumption. This includes:
Breaking news from China and abroad
The latest market data, including price information for raw materials, intermediates and end products, import/export data, production, consumption, operating rates, etc.
In-depth analysis of market trends, Chinese government policy, the performance of leading Chinese producers, M&A, new technologies, and more
Expert commentary from industry insiders, including regular guest articles and interviews with insiders at leading Chinese manufacturers, associations and government organizations"
Headlines
On 27 Feb., 2017, the sugarcane procurement price in Guangxi Province was increased to RMB500/t. Given this direct benefit,Guangxis sugarcane growers are becoming more enthusiastic about planting sugarcane, and the output of sugar from Oct. 201 7 to Sept. 2018 is expected to increase as a result, along with the sugarcane planting area in Guangxi.
On 8 March, 2017, Mr. Tang Yiling, a deputy of National Peoples Congress and Shengquan Groups chairman of the board, proposed better marketing and wider application of functional sugars like L(+)-Arabinose. He appealed to Chinese government to provide support for domestic L(+)-Arabinose industry and fulfil its potential for growth by bringing down production costs, increasing
output and enhancing brand awareness.
On 3 March, 2017, the 2rd working group meeting and seminar about the establishment of national standards for inulin and FOS was held in Beijing. In spite of their promising prospects, the development of inulin and FOS industry lags behind because relevant standards are set late. Thus, national standardisation of inulin and FOS will boost the development of these two industries.
On 7 March, 2017, the CSA unveiled the results of the check about the practice of the full-year 201 6 production plans of the 3 designated saccharin manufacturers: all production and sales were based on the plans. Specifically, environmental treatment was a key restriction on the production that year, according to the manufacturers.
In recent year, Chinas stevia sweetener industry has developed rapidly, thanks to a growing popularity of stevia sweeteners. The intriguing prospects of stevia sweetener industry attract a great number of investment from Chinas stevia sweetener manufacturers, which consequently increases the production capacity of stevia sweeteners.
On 6 March, 2017, QHT issued its full-year 2016 financial report, declaring a YoY increase of 9.27% in net profit achieved by the steady growth of prebiotics sales and increased proportion of high value added products sold. To improve its financial performance in 2017, QHT has begun to attract investment and conduct hedging of white sugar.
On 10 March, 2017, Shandong Longlive announced the operation of its 6,000 t/a high purity XOS project, which enables higher quality products. Given high price of XOS and its leading position, Shandong Longlive is expected to improve its financial performance in future.
On 8 March, 2017, COFCO Sugar announced to establish a tomato company for its injection of tomato business and its focus on sugar business. In addition, it planned to apply for a financing of USD2.33 billion (RMB1 6 billion) this year. With its 3 acquisitions last year, the company is gradually shifting its focus to sugar business.
On 17 March, 2017, Anhui Jinhe released its full-year 201 6 financial report, declaring a YoY increase in sales and net profit. It revealed that the increase resulted from a YoY increase in sales of acesulfame-K and sucralose as well as an increase in the gross profit margin of basic chemical products. Given that chemical production is a focus for environmental protection, the output of
acesulfame-K and sucralose will remain low and their prices will accordingly be high. Therefore, Anhui Jinhes financial performance in 2017 will continue to benefit from the sale of these two products.
According to CCMs price monitoring, Chinas ex-works price of crystalline xylitol achieved a MoM increase in Feb. 201 7, because the supply of raw materials were small and crystalline xylitol production was halted after rigorous environmental inspections. In the first half of 2017, an inadequate supply of raw materials and thorough inspections on xylitol enterprises pushed up xylitol price.
However, in the second half of 2017, the prices of xylose and corn are expected to fall, and xylitol price will swing due to the continous environmental inspections.
