The Nokia’s 5G overlay solution works with any vendor’s LTE network to simplify network evolution
MNOs can deploy 5G in a single or multi-vendor network architecture; both present challenges and opportunities. The Nokia 5G overlay solution enables multi-vendor architecture to be used without risk to existing services, but MNOs must plan the network with care.
Deploying Nokia’s 5G overlay solution creates some operational challenges and MNOs should tread carefully to avoid risk to existing 4G services.
In late March 2019, Nokia announced a 5G overlay radio solution to help mobile network operators (MNOs) that already have an existing supplier for their 4G radio access network (RAN) to deploy 5G quickly without disrupting existing services. The 5G architecture that is standardised under 3GPP Release 15 can be deployed in multiple ways, but there are challenges with each. This comment gives an overview of these deployment options and provides an analysis of Nokia’s solution.
